Ethiopia has taken a significant step toward developing its commercial space sector following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ethiopian Space Science Society (ESSS) and Japan’s space business platform Cross U.

The agreement formalises cooperation between the two institutions to accelerate the growth of Ethiopia’s space technology ecosystem and promote space-based business initiatives through international collaboration.

The MoU was signed by ESSS Managing Director Kirubel Menberu and Cross U President Professor Shinichi Nakasuka, with participation from senior representatives of both organisations and stakeholders from the broader space industry.

Officials said the partnership aims to bridge the Ethiopian and Japanese space sectors by facilitating knowledge exchange, joint innovation, and the development of commercially viable space applications tailored to local needs.

The collaboration outlines key areas of focus, including identifying market-driven use cases for satellite data solutions, supporting the incubation of space startups, and strengthening human capital development through training, internships, and research partnerships.

The initiative also seeks to leverage digital platforms to expand awareness of space technologies while enabling joint research and development efforts to deliver practical solutions across sectors such as agriculture, finance, and infrastructure.

As part of the engagement, Japanese space companies showcased potential collaboration opportunities, demonstrating how advanced technologies in microsatellites and Earth observation can be integrated into local industries to address real-world challenges.

The agreement received high-level endorsement from ESSS Patron Demeke Mekonnen, who described the partnership as a strategic milestone that not only advances Ethiopia’s space ambitions but also strengthens broader bilateral relations between Ethiopia and Japan in science and technology.

Stakeholders noted that the collaboration is expected to contribute to building a sustainable, innovation-driven space economy while positioning Ethiopia as an emerging player in the global space industry.
