The
International Science Council (ISC) has celebrated a dual recognition of its
leadership in science diplomacy, with its President and Chief Executive Officer
receiving high-level distinctions from the Academy of Sciences of Moldova.
ISC
President Sir Peter Gluckman was awarded the “Dimitrie Cantemir” Medal, the
highest honour of the Academy, in recognition of his contributions to global
scientific cooperation and science diplomacy. ISC Chief Executive Officer Dr
Salvatore Aricò received the “Nicolae Milescu Spătarul” Medal for his role in
advancing international scientific collaboration.

During
the ceremony, Sir Peter highlighted the growing challenges facing the global
scientific community, including declining public trust, short-term funding
cycles, and the rapid advancement of technologies such as artificial
intelligence that are outpacing governance frameworks. He emphasized, however,
that science remains a unifying global force rooted in shared inquiry and
cross-cultural collaboration.
Dr
Aricò underscored the ISC’s expanding global membership, noting that the
organisation now represents nearly 300 institutions worldwide, reflecting a
commitment to making science more inclusive and globally representative.
The
ISC leadership expressed appreciation to the Academy of Sciences of Moldova,
the Romanian Academy, and academician Ion Tiginyanu for their support and
recognition of international scientific cooperation.
