The
African Telecommunications Union (ATU), in collaboration with the Government of
Ghana, has convened the first African Preparatory Meeting (APM-1) for the 2028
World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA-28).
The
meeting, taking place from April 13 to 17, 2026 at the Palms Airport City
Hotel, brings together delegates from across the continent to begin shaping
Africa’s collective position in global ICT standardization processes.
Held
under the theme “Strengthening Africa’s Common Position for WTSA-28,” the
gathering is focused on aligning priorities and strategies to enhance Africa’s
influence in the development of international telecommunications standards.
Participants
are expected to deliberate on key policy and technical issues with the aim of
transitioning the continent from a largely passive role in global
standard-setting to a more active and influential one.
The
meeting underscores growing efforts by African countries to assert a unified
voice in the global digital ecosystem, particularly as emerging technologies
continue to reshape economies and societies.
Ghana’s
Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey
George, is serving as Guest of Honour, highlighting the country’s commitment to
advancing regional and continental digital cooperation.
The
outcomes of APM-1 are expected to inform Africa’s coordinated contributions to
WTSA-28, positioning the continent to play a more strategic role in shaping the
future of global ICT standards.
