Ethiopia
has taken a significant step toward strengthening its health systems with the
launch of the Ethiopian Digital Health Network (EDHN), aligning with broader
continental efforts to accelerate digital transformation in healthcare.
The
initiative forms part of the Africa Health Security and Sovereignty (AHSS)
Agenda, where digital transformation has been identified as a critical pillar
for improving primary healthcare delivery, enhancing health intelligence, and
building more resilient and trusted health systems across the continent.

The
EDHN is designed to provide a coordinated platform for leadership, stakeholder
engagement, and strategic alignment, helping to reduce fragmentation in digital
health initiatives while fostering collaboration among key actors in the
sector. The network is also expected to support the development of communities
of practice and strengthen linkages between national and continental digital
health priorities.
The
launch comes at a time when African Union Member States are working toward an
ambitious target of achieving 90 percent digitalization of primary healthcare
systems by 2035. Platforms such as the EDHN are seen as essential in driving
this agenda by enabling knowledge sharing, improving system interoperability,
and supporting data-driven decision-making.

The
development is further underscored by the recent designation of Ethiopian Prime
Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali as the African Union’s Champion for Artificial
Intelligence and Digital Health, a role expected to bolster advocacy and
coordination around digital innovation in the health sector.
While
the EDHN is being implemented at the national level, its impact is expected to
extend beyond Ethiopia, contributing to Africa’s broader vision of leveraging
digital technologies to strengthen health systems and improve outcomes across
the continent.
