The Autorité de Régulation des Télécommunications et des Postes du Sénégal (ARTP) has launched a two-day training seminar for journalists aimed at improving media coverage of regulated sectors, particularly electronic communications and postal services.

The seminar, taking place from April 10 to 11, 2026, is being held in partnership with the Convention of Young Reporters of Senegal (CJRS) and the Union of Community Radios of Senegal (URAC), bringing together media professionals to deepen their understanding of regulatory frameworks.

The initiative seeks to equip journalists with the knowledge required to better inform the public, including how regulatory mechanisms function and how citizens can engage with the regulator. It also aims to enhance the media’s role in facilitating access to accurate and relevant information in the digital age.

Speaking at the opening, ARTP Director General Dahirou Thiam reiterated the institution’s commitment to inclusive regulation based on stakeholder engagement. He outlined the authority’s core responsibilities, including market regulation, consumer protection, and the management of limited resources such as radio frequencies.

Thiam noted that regulatory approaches are evolving toward co-regulation in response to increasingly interconnected sectors, particularly with the rise of fintech and audiovisual services. He also highlighted recent efforts to modernize regulatory tools and disclosed that more than 1.5 million non-compliant mobile numbers were deactivated in 2025.

Emphasizing the critical role of the media, he called for stronger collaboration between regulators and journalists to improve public understanding of regulatory challenges, including cybersecurity and digital transformation.

The seminar is expected to strengthen participants’ reporting capacity and contribute to more accurate, accessible, and impactful information for the Senegalese public.
