Algeria
has launched a competitive tender to award licenses for satellite-based
telecommunications services, marking a significant step toward expanding
inclusive connectivity across the country.
The
initiative, announced by Autorité de Régulation de la Poste et des
Communications Électroniques, will see the issuance of two licenses for the
establishment and operation of public electronic communications networks using
non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellite systems.
The
Minister of Post and Telecommunication, Sid Ali Zerrouki said the move is aimed
at delivering high-speed internetb access to remote and underserved areas,
while also supporting the deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions in
sectors such as agriculture, mining, and transport.
Officials
noted that opening the market to satellite operators is expected to enhance
competition, improve service delivery, and accelerate the country’s digital
transformation agenda.
The
tender reflects Algeria’s broader strategy to leverage advanced technologies to
bridge connectivity gaps and extend reliable digital services to hard-to-reach
communities.
