Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary
for the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy
(MICDE), William Kabogo, has conducted an inspection of the ongoing assembly of
digital devices at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology
(JKUAT) as part of Kenya’s national digital transformation programme.
During the visit, CS Kabogo
observed the assembly of 3,000 devices at JKUAT, while an additional 7,000
devices are being assembled simultaneously at Moi University. These devices are
set to be deployed within three weeks to digital innovation hubs across the
country, complementing more than 20,000 devices already in use at over 300
hubs.

The initiative, implemented
in partnership with institutions of higher learning and supported by Members of
the National Assembly through the National Government Constituencies
Development Fund, aims to establish 1,450 digital hubs nationwide, with at least
one in every ward.
CS Kabogo highlighted that
the partnerships with local universities and other institutions will strengthen
technical capacity, promote local ownership, and ensure the sustainability of
the hubs. The programme seeks to expand access to digital infrastructure,
reduce the digital divide, and create opportunities for citizens across Kenya.

The inspection was attended
by senior officials including Dr. James Micah Onsando, Chairman of the JKUAT
Council; Vice Chancellor Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi; Deputy Vice Chancellors
Prof. Robert Kinyua, Prof. Bernard Ikua, and Prof. Jackson Kwanza; CEO of ICT
Authority Jessy Kiveu Maruti; Secretary of ICT Infrastructure Washington Okoth;
and representatives from KONZA Technopolis.
