The
African Union Commission is taking steps to ensure Africa transitions from a
consumer to a creator in the global digital economy through strategic workforce
development in Artificial Intelligence. H.E. Commissioner Lerato D. Mataboge,
in her role overseeing Infrastructure and Energy, has met with the CEO of
Gebeya, Amadou Daffe a leading Pan-African technology platform, to discuss
aligning private sector innovation with the AU Continental AI Strategy and the
Digital Transformation Strategy 2020–2030.

The
discussions focused on Gebeya’s “Talent Clouds” model, which has trained over
250,000 individuals and aims, with partners, to prepare 50,000 AI developers.
This initiative supports the AU’s Second Ten-Year Implementation Plan by
developing a specialised workforce capable of deploying AI solutions across
critical sectors including energy and transport.

The
dialogue also highlighted the importance of inclusive digital growth and the
need to position African entrepreneurs at the forefront of AI innovation. The
AU Commission’s Department of Infrastructure and Energy is fostering
partnerships to strengthen AI capacity, create supportive ecosystems for
entrepreneurs, and localise data infrastructure, enabling Africa’s youth to
actively drive the continent’s digital transformation during the Decade of
Acceleration.
