Ghana’s
President John Dramani Mahama has signed into law the University of Engineering
and Agricultural Sciences Act, 2026, paving the way for the establishment of a
new public university aimed at advancing technical and agricultural education
in the country.
The
new institution will be located in the Eastern Region at Bonsu, with a
multi-campus structure designed to expand access to specialized education
across different parts of Ghana. In addition to the main campus in Bonsu, the
university will operate a second campus in Ohawu in the Oti Region and a third
campus in Acherensua in the Ahafo Region.
The
establishment of the university forms part of broader efforts by the government
to strengthen science, technology, engineering, and agriculture-focused
education, while supporting regional development through the decentralization
of higher learning institutions.
The
President assented to the bill on March 31, 2026, alongside four other pieces
of legislation, including the Security and Intelligence Agencies Act,
amendments to the Ghana Deposit Protection Act, the Growth and Sustainability
Levy Act, and the Education Regulatory Bodies Act.
Officials
at the signing ceremony underscored the strategic importance of the new
university in building a skilled workforce capable of supporting Ghana’s
industrialisation and agricultural transformation agenda.
The
ceremony was attended by senior government officials, including representatives
from Parliament and key members of the executive, as the administration
continues to roll out policy measures aimed at strengthening education and
economic resilience.
