The
European Union is moving forward with efforts to strengthen its semiconductor
industry as discussions begin on the next phase of its digital strategy under
the proposed Chips Act 2.0.
Henna
Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and
Democracy, hosted a high-level dialogue in Brussels with stakeholders from
across the semiconductor sector to review progress on the implementation of the
European Chips Act and gather industry feedback ahead of its planned revision.

The
meeting brought together key players to assess achievements under the current
framework and identify areas requiring adjustment to better support Europe’s
growing semiconductor ambitions.
Officials
say the European Chips Act remains a central policy tool aimed at boosting the
region’s semiconductor ecosystem, improving competitiveness, and reducing
reliance on external supply chains.
The
planned update, referred to as Chips Act 2.0, is expected to build on existing
measures while addressing emerging challenges in the global semiconductor
landscape.

The
European Commission has positioned semiconductor development as a critical
pillar of its broader strategy to enhance technological sovereignty and secure
resilient digital infrastructure across the bloc.
