Sierra
Leone has taken a significant step toward strengthening its healthcare and
higher education systems through a new international collaboration focused on
building radiology capacity.
The
initiative, led by Haja Ramatulai Wurie, brings together key partners including
the University of Pennsylvania, RAD-AID, the Ministry of Health, and the
College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences.

The
partners recently convened their first implementation meeting to operationalize
a memorandum of understanding aimed at delivering tangible outcomes in
radiology training and workforce development.
A
central component of the collaboration is the launch of the National
Radiography Workforce Pipeline Initiative (NRWPI) Phase I. The programme will
assess existing training, certification, and licensure pathways, identify gaps
within the system, and develop a national roadmap supported by policy
recommendations.
Officials
say the initiative will also establish a baseline for a coordinated and
sustainable radiography workforce pipeline, addressing long-standing capacity
challenges in the country’s healthcare sector.

The
collaboration builds on earlier engagements between Sierra Leonean authorities
and international institutions, reflecting a broader strategy to leverage
global partnerships to strengthen specialized medical training and improve
healthcare delivery.
Authorities
noted that the initiative marks a critical milestone in enhancing diagnostic
capabilities and expanding access to quality healthcare services across the
country.
