The
Science for Africa Foundation has convened the Interim Steering Committee of
the African Population Cohorts Consortium (APCC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia,
bringing together leading scientists, innovators, and partners to strengthen
population health research across the continent.

The
meeting focuses on harnessing the potential of more than 60 population cohorts
across 16 African countries to generate high-quality, Africa-led data that can
inform policy decisions, improve health systems, and enhance public health
outcomes.
Key
discussions are centered on strengthening governance and secretariat
structures, improving data harmonisation and interoperability, and developing
robust ethical frameworks to guide large-scale research. Participants are also
exploring strategic research priorities spanning climate change, health, and
universal health coverage, alongside mechanisms to translate research findings
into policy and practice.
Organizers
noted that the initiative is particularly critical given that a significant
number of African countries lack comprehensive health data systems,
underscoring the need for coordinated efforts to build reliable and accessible
data infrastructure.

The
APCC aims to leverage longitudinal data, cross-country collaboration, and
Africa’s diverse populations to position the continent at the forefront of
global scientific discovery. Officials say the initiative will play a key role
in driving evidence-based solutions tailored to African contexts while
contributing to broader global health research efforts.
