South Africa’s Department of
Science, Technology and Innovation has intensified efforts to deepen
collaboration with the private sector following a high-level engagement with
Sappi in Johannesburg.
Deputy Minister of Science,
Technology and Innovation, Dr Nomalungelo Gina, led a government delegation to
explore opportunities for advancing research, development, and innovation
through public-private partnerships. The discussions focused on aligning industry
capabilities with national priorities in science and technology.

Sappi highlighted its work
in renewable woodfibre and alternative materials such as sugarcane bagasse,
demonstrating the role of industry in driving sustainable and low-carbon
economic growth. Sappi Southern Africa CEO Graeme Wild shared insights into the
company’s innovation efforts and their potential to contribute to environmental
sustainability and industrial transformation.
Officials emphasized that
partnerships between government and industry are critical to translating
research into practical applications, creating jobs, and fostering inclusive
economic growth. The engagement forms part of broader initiatives to accelerate
the development of a green economy and strengthen South Africa’s innovation
ecosystem.
