The Government of Tanzania
has donated health commodities valued at TZS 220 million to the Democratic
Republic of Congo (DRC) to support ongoing efforts to respond to an Ebola
outbreak.
The handover took place at
the close of the 4th Eastern Africa Regional Emergency Support and Coordination
Office (ReSCO) Ministerial Meeting, highlighting growing regional cooperation
in responding to public health emergencies.
Tanzania’s Minister of
Health, Mohammed Omar Mchengerwa, said the donation demonstrated the importance
of practical solidarity among African countries during health crises.
The assistance is expected
to contribute to the DRC’s ongoing response efforts by providing critical
health commodities at a time when coordinated regional action remains essential
to containing the spread of Ebola.
The Africa Centres for
Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said the development underscored
the interconnected nature of public health across the continent, stressing that
health emergencies in one country can have implications for neighbouring states
and the wider region.
The donation also reflects
the role of regional mechanisms such as ReSCO in strengthening coordination,
resource mobilisation and rapid support during health emergencies.
The handover comes as
African health institutions and governments continue to emphasise the need for
stronger preparedness, faster response mechanisms and greater cross-border
cooperation in addressing outbreaks and other public health threats.
