As
the Connected Africa Summit 2026 officially commenced in Nairobi, African
Ministers and Principal Secretaries undertook a site visit to Nia Fiber,
Kenya’s first and only fiber optic cable manufacturing facility located in Athi
River, Machakos County.
The
delegation was given an in-depth tour of the 24-hour production facility, where
they observed the manufacturing of key fiber optic solutions, including ADSS,
duct, and FTTH drop cables. The plant was showcased as a critical enabler of
high-speed broadband infrastructure, supporting both national and regional
connectivity needs.

The
visit highlighted the role of local manufacturing in advancing digital
inclusion, strengthening broadband infrastructure, and enhancing self-reliance
in critical ICT components. Officials noted that the facility contributes to
job creation, skills development in advanced manufacturing, and reduced
dependence on imported fiber optic products.
Speaking
during the tour, the Principal Secretary for ICT and Digital Economy, Eng. John
Kipchumba Tanui, emphasized that the initiative reflects Kenya’s commitment to
building a resilient digital ecosystem anchored on local production and
innovation.

The
engagement formed part of the broader Summit agenda and underscored a shared
continental commitment to expanding digital infrastructure, promoting
industrial capacity, and accelerating inclusive digital transformation across
Africa.
