The United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting
Ghana’s climate action and environmental sustainability initiatives following a
meeting between its Resident Representative, Niloy Banerjee, and the Minister
of Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings.
During a visit to the
Ministry, Banerjee congratulated Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings on her appointment and
expressed confidence in building on the strong collaboration between UNDP and
the Ministry under her leadership.
UNDP is currently working
with the Ministry on several initiatives, including support for Ghana’s
Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), access to vertical climate funds,
carbon markets and the carbon registry, adaptation finance, energy efficiency,
mercury-free mining, ocean-related initiatives and waste recovery.
The discussions also
highlighted the need to rethink approaches to waste management, including
empowering communities to take greater ownership of recycling and recovery.
Climate finance and
strengthening research and development in the sector were also identified as
important areas for advancing practical environmental solutions.
UNDP Ghana said climate
action requires more than policy, stressing the importance of financing,
research, strong systems and partnerships that can turn ambition into results.
The organisation reaffirmed
its commitment to helping Ghana protect the environment, advance practical
solutions for climate action and promote sustainable development.
