Safaricom Ethiopia has expanded its 4G network across southern Ethiopia with the activation of 16 new sites in towns and surrounding communities previously without access to its network.

The newly connected locations include Sawla, Selam Ber, Basketo, Beto and Leha, among other surrounding communities. The expansion is expected to improve access to voice, data and SMS services while enabling residents to make greater use of digital and financial services.

Safaricom Ethiopia said the new sites are connected through a fibre-optic network and are designed to provide reliable and high-quality connectivity. The infrastructure is also 5G-ready and supports international roaming, positioning the network to accommodate future demand for advanced digital services.

The expansion is expected to support greater participation in the digital economy by connecting communities to online services, businesses and digital financial solutions.

Beyond connectivity, Safaricom Ethiopia said the deployment has created employment opportunities for more than 80 local residents, with additional jobs expected as the company expands its operations and services in the region.

The operator said the network expansion forms part of its broader commitment to extending digital connectivity to underserved communities and enabling more Ethiopians to benefit from the opportunities created by the digital economy.
