The Autorité de Protection
des Données Personnelles (APDP) of Benin is intensifying efforts to strengthen
personal data protection as the country accelerates its digital transformation
agenda.
The authority has
highlighted the growing importance of protecting citizens’ personal information
as digital services become increasingly integrated into public and private
sector activities.
The APDP said its engagement
with private-sector organisations and other actors across Benin’s digital
ecosystem remains central to creating a safer and more responsible digital
environment.
As more businesses and
institutions adopt digital platforms, the authority is also focusing on the
relationship between cybersecurity and personal data protection. While
cybersecurity measures are essential to protecting digital systems from
threats, effective data protection ensures that personal information is
collected, processed, stored and shared in accordance with applicable rules and
citizens’ rights.
The APDP’s engagement with
stakeholders is aimed at improving awareness of data protection obligations and
encouraging organisations to incorporate privacy considerations into their
digital operations.
The authority is also
identifying priorities for the coming years as Benin’s digital ecosystem
continues to expand. These priorities are expected to support stronger
compliance, greater cooperation with digital-sector stakeholders and improved
protection of individuals’ rights in the digital environment.
The APDP said these efforts
are ultimately intended to strengthen public confidence in digital technologies
while supporting a secure and responsible digital transformation in Benin.
