Airtel Money Uganda has
called for stronger collaboration, technology and security-by-design approaches
to address growing cybersecurity threats affecting Uganda’s expanding digital
economy.
Airtel Money Uganda Managing
Director Japhet Aritho made the remarks during the inaugural National
Cybersecurity Conference organised by the Uganda Communications Commission
(UCC), where industry stakeholders gathered to discuss measures for
strengthening the country’s digital resilience.
Aritho highlighted Airtel’s
approach to addressing threats including social engineering, SIM swap fraud and
account takeover, emphasising the importance of combining technological
safeguards with stronger processes and greater public awareness.
The discussions come as the
rapid growth of digital financial and communications services increases the
need for stronger protection of platforms, systems and users against cyber
threats.
Airtel Uganda said building
a safer digital ecosystem requires shared responsibility among
telecommunications companies, financial service providers, regulators,
government institutions and consumers.
The company stressed that
security measures must be incorporated into the design of digital platforms and
services, rather than treated as an afterthought.
The conference provided a
platform for stakeholders to exchange experiences and examine ways to
strengthen cybersecurity awareness, incident preparedness and consumer
protection as Uganda advances its digital transformation agenda.
Airtel Uganda said continued
investment in secure systems, effective processes and public awareness would be
essential to maintaining trust in digital services and protecting users from
increasingly sophisticated forms of fraud.
