The Nigerian Communications
Commission (NCC) has convened stakeholders in Abuja to strengthen measures for
protecting fibre optic infrastructure during road construction projects across
the country.
The Stakeholders’ Workshop
for the Protection of Fibre Optic Cables During Road Construction was held at
the Office of the National Security Adviser’s Conference Room in Abuja.
The workshop brought
together key government and infrastructure stakeholders, including the Federal
Ministry of Works and the Directorate of Critical National Assets and
Infrastructure Protection (DCNAIP) under the Office of the National Security
Adviser (ONSA).
NCC Executive Vice Chairman
and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Aminu Maida, participated in the engagement
alongside Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Works, Rafiu Olarinre
Adeladan, and Director of DCNAIP, Air Vice Marshal Effiom Enebong Ewa.
The engagement focused on
the growing need to safeguard fibre optic cables and other telecommunications
infrastructure from damage associated with road construction and related
infrastructure projects.
Fibre optic networks form a
critical component of Nigeria’s digital infrastructure, supporting broadband
connectivity, mobile communications, financial services, government platforms
and other digital services.
Damage to fibre
infrastructure during construction activities can result in service
disruptions, increased repair costs and interruptions to businesses and
consumers.
The workshop provided a
platform for relevant institutions and stakeholders to discuss stronger
coordination and preventive measures to minimise infrastructure damage and
protect the continuity of telecommunications services.
