South Sudan has pledged to
deepen its collaboration with the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) in
digital infrastructure development, capacity building and telecommunications
standardisation.
The commitment was made by
South Sudan’s Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal
Services, Hon. Ateny Wek Ateny, during a visit to the ATU headquarters in
Nairobi.
During the engagement,
Minister Ateny congratulated ATU Secretary General John Omo on completing eight
years of service to the Union and also congratulated Eng. Kezias Kazuba Mwale
on his election as the Union’s next Secretary General.
Discussions focused on
opportunities for South Sudan to strengthen its participation in the Union’s
programmes and contribute more actively to the continent’s telecommunications
and digital development agenda.
Minister Ateny committed
South Sudan to working with ATU on initiatives aimed at strengthening national
capacity and advancing digital infrastructure. He also expressed the country’s
interest in creating greater opportunities for South Sudanese professionals to
participate in ATU’s standardisation and development activities.
The engagement comes as
African countries continue to strengthen regional cooperation around digital
infrastructure, technical skills and common telecommunications standards to
support the continent’s digital transformation.
ATU welcomed South Sudan’s
commitment and expressed its readiness to deepen engagement with the country as
part of efforts to advance the Union’s objectives and strengthen collaboration
among its member states.
