Kenya’s Data Commissioner, Immaculate Kassait, SC, MBS, has called for a rights-centred approach to the adoption of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in the justice sector, emphasising the need to protect privacy, data and human rights as innovation accelerates.

Kassait made the remarks during a panel discussion at the Federation of Women Lawyers-Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) Annual Members Conference, where participants examined the role of artificial intelligence, digital innovation and technology in advancing gender justice and transforming legal practice.

The discussion highlighted the growing influence of emerging technologies on the legal and justice landscape, while stressing the importance of ensuring that technological advancement does not undermine fundamental rights and protections.

Kassait emphasised that privacy and data protection must remain central to digital transformation, alongside inclusion and respect for human rights. The approach, she indicated, is critical as AI and other technologies become increasingly integrated into professional and public services.

The conference also highlighted the role of women lawyers in shaping the future of technology and justice. As digital tools increasingly influence legal practice, women in the legal profession have an important role to play in driving responsible innovation, contributing to policy development and promoting greater inclusion.
