The Uganda Institute of
Information and Communications Technology (UICT) has highlighted significant
progress in digital skills development, innovation, and technical and
vocational education and training (TVET) transformation as part of its
contribution to Uganda’s digital transformation agenda.
Speaking at the 2026
Ministry of ICT and National Guidance ICT Sector Annual Performance Review
Retreat, UICT Principal Dr. Fredrick E. Kitoogo outlined the institution’s
achievements in expanding digital education, strengthening innovation capacity
and building partnerships to support the country’s technology ecosystem.
During the 2025/26 financial
year, UICT trained 36,332 citizens in digital skills, alongside 1,932
government officers, 1,207 educators and TVET instructors. The institute also
trained 8,977 participants in immersive and emerging technologies while developing
21 augmented, virtual and extended reality (AVR/XR) courses and modules.
The institution also
strengthened its focus beyond digital training by advancing applied research,
innovation and commercialisation initiatives. Through the National ICT
Innovation Hub, UICT continues to support innovators in developing
technology-driven solutions with potential economic and social impact.
Dr. Kitoogo said the
institute remains focused on building a future-ready workforce through quality
ICT education, practical skills development and stronger industry-oriented
training programmes.
For the 2026/27 financial
year, UICT has identified key priorities including improving ICT and digital
skills education, expanding applied research and innovation, modernising
infrastructure, commercialising innovative solutions, strengthening institutional
excellence and achieving full TVET compliance.
The institute is also
positioning itself to contribute to Uganda’s National Development Plan IV
through expanded digital skills training, enhanced student certification,
stronger innovation ecosystems and improved institutional governance.
UICT’s continued investments
in digital capacity building and innovation are expected to play a key role in
preparing Uganda’s workforce for emerging technologies and supporting the
country’s broader digital economy ambitions.
