The
Government of Sierra Leone has approved Africell as the investment partner for
the relaunch of state-owned telecom operator Sierratel.
The
announcement was made by Minister of Communication, Technology and Innovation
Salima Bah during a weekly press briefing organised by the Ministry of
Information and Civic Education.
According
to the Minister, the partnership will operate under a Mobile Virtual Network
Operator (MVNO) model, allowing Sierratel to provide services by leveraging
existing telecommunications infrastructure through its collaboration with
Africell.
The
arrangement is expected to facilitate the re-entry of Sierratel into the market
while optimising infrastructure use and reducing capital expenditure associated
with network deployment.
Officials
indicated that the partnership forms part of broader efforts to revitalise the
country’s telecommunications sector, improve service delivery, and expand
access to digital connectivity across Sierra Leone.
