Zimbabwe has unveiled f a homegrown artificial intelligence platform by Econet Wireless Zimbabwe in partnership with Cassava Technologies.

The new platform, unveiled by Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services Tatenda Mavetera, is aimed at positioning the country as a creator of technology rather than a consumer, in line with its Vision 2030 and National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2).

Speaking at the launch, the minister described the initiative as a milestone in Zimbabwe’s digital journey, emphasizing its alignment with the country’s National AI Strategy and broader goals of fostering innovation and inclusive growth.

The project includes investments by Cassava Technologies in graphics processing units (GPUs) and fibre infrastructure to expand access to advanced AI tools for students, entrepreneurs, and creatives across the country.

As part of the initiative, the government plans to establish decentralised provincial AI excellence hubs, including a Google Experience Center, alongside upskilling programmes supported by the Youth Digital Skills Development Levy.

Authorities also indicated that work is underway to develop an AI Ethics Charter, drawing from existing readiness assessment frameworks to ensure that governance, inclusivity, and accessibility remain central to AI deployment.

Officials noted that the platform is expected to support key sectors such as agriculture, education, and healthcare, while strengthening Zimbabwe’s capacity to harness emerging technologies for economic development.

The launch underscores growing efforts to build a robust digital ecosystem and position Zimbabwe as a competitive player in the global technology landscape.
